Most teams asking this already pay for a tool that draws Gantt bars. Asana, ClickUp, monday.com and Smartsheet all ship a timeline. The real question is not "can I see bars" but "when Monday's task slips three days, does the software move everything downstream and tell me the finish date changed."

If nobody can name a task whose slip should automatically push six others, you want a timeline view, not a scheduling engine, and you can stop shopping.

Almost every tool supports finish-to-start. That covers "the wall gets built before it gets painted," and for many projects that is the whole story. The other three matter when work overlaps or trails.

The mistake worth naming: buying the third shape for a problem in the first. Key questions to ask before you commit

  1. Which tier do baselines and critical path sit on? Microsoft is the clearest example: dependencies are on the $10 tier, baselines and critical path on the $30 one.
  2. Can you build a start-to-start link with two days of lag, right now, on this call? The fastest way to separate real scheduling from timeline drawing.
  3. What is the billing unit? Per user, per seat and per plan produce very different bills at the same headcount.
  4. Do view-only stakeholders consume a paid seat? On a 12-person project with 30 stakeholders, this answer alone can triple the quote.
  5. How many baselines can we keep, and can we export them? If the answer is one, replanning permanently destroys your variance story.

Two naming changes trip up buyers. What guides still call "Project Plan 1" is now Microsoft Planner Plan 1, and "Project Plan 3" is now Planner and Project Plan 3. Wrike renamed its top tiers Pinnacle and Apex. A quote using the old names was written against an old price list.

Two seat caps do real damage to a budget. Smartsheet Pro tops out at 10 members and Wrike Team at 15, so a team of 16 does not pay a little more, it pays the Business rate for everyone (Wrike Business is $25 user/month annual, so $15,000 a year at 50). Plan against the tier you will be on in a year, not the one on the homepage, and note that none of these totals include training or schedule-owner time. Where per-plan pricing beats per-seat

TeamGantt is the useful case study, because it no longer sells per seat at all. It sells a plan with a manager and collaborator allowance, so price moves with project count, not headcount.
