The cloud flavor gets mislabeled most often. Someone who has spent three years designing VPC architecture is doing real network engineering, and will still fail a spanning-tree whiteboard question. The reverse holds too. Neither gap is a weakness; both are a mismatch between the posting and the interview.

There is no federal occupation called "network engineer." The work splits across two, and they are not going the same way.
The BLS entry for network and computer systems administrators reports a median annual wage of $99,130 as of May 2025 across 323,600 jobs, with employment projected to decline 4 percent from 2025 to 2035, a loss of 13,200 jobs. The entry for computer network architects reports a median of $134,050 as of May 2025 across 181,800 jobs, projected to grow 8 percent, which BLS calls "much faster than the average for all occupations," adding 14,100 jobs.
BLS names the cause of the decline directly: some administrator tasks are increasingly done by software developers focused on DevOps, some are outsourced to companies providing Networks-as-a-Service, and administrators are increasingly automating routine tasks themselves. That also explains the roughly 13,400 openings a year, all of which BLS attributes to replacing workers who leave rather than to new positions. The corollary is useful: a candidate whose entire career is device-by-device configuration sits in the shrinking half. That doesn't make them a bad hire, but it does mean asking what they've automated.
One detail sharpens the point. O*NET's record for network and computer systems administrators lists "Network Engineer" outright among its reported job titles. The record for computer network architects doesn't list it at all, only "WAN Engineer" and "Wireless Network Engineer." The taxonomy files the words on your posting under the shrinking occupation, even when the work is closer to the growing one.

About the Role
We're looking for a Network Engineer to own the network our offices and sites run on. You'll design, build, and maintain the switching, routing, and wireless infrastructure across our locations, keep the WAN circuits and SD-WAN policies healthy, and work out what's actually wrong when someone says "the network is slow."
This is hands-on ownership, not ticket-closing. You'll execute changes inside defined maintenance windows, which means some scheduled evening and weekend work, and you'll carry a share of the on-call rotation. Better said now than discovered in week three.
The ideal candidate can hold a packet path in their head from laptop to application and back, and can explain why a fix takes four hours instead of ten minutes. You document what you build, because the next person to touch it at 2am might be you. You'll report to our IT Manager.

Certifications carry real weight here, because the vendor ecosystems are deep and the exams test configuration skill. What trips up hiring managers is the renewal rules, which differ by vendor and get quoted wrong constantly.

Cisco states that "most Cisco certifications are active for three years from the date you earn the certification," and publishes CE credit totals by level. Note the CCST split: earned before July 15, 2025 it stays valid for a lifetime, earned after it's valid five years, and CE credits don't apply to CCST or CCT. Juniper has no continuing-education path at all; per its own recertification guidance, "All JNCP certifications are active for three years," after which you pass an exam or take a course. We're deliberately not printing a CEU count for Network+: CompTIA's renewal policy confirms certifications "expire three years from the certification date," but CompTIA's own pages disagree on the CEU figure, so check for your exam version. And the AWS Advanced Networking Specialty exam retires December 31, 2026, so don't require it in a 2027 posting.

At an early-stage company, "network engineer" often means whoever owns everything with an IP address, which in a cloud-native startup may involve no physical switching at all.

Remote network engineering works better than people expect, right up to the moment something needs a hand on the device. If the role needs someone within driving distance of a site, say so with a radius, not a vague "occasional travel." If you have smart hands on contract at each site, say that too.
State plainly how change windows and on-call work across time zones. A distributed team reduces the overnight burden by covering windows in each region's local evening. One remote engineer covering every site's window is a night shift with extra steps.

Core protocol knowledge transfers everywhere. What changes by sector is which flavor gets hired first, and how much regulatory or physical weight sits on top.
