Semrush vs Similarweb: Search-First SEO or All-Channel Traffic Intelligence?

Turn this article into takeaways for your work.

Each assistant summarizes the article only for you and suggests best practices for your work.

Semrush and Similarweb get compared constantly because both will show you how much traffic a competitor gets. But they answer different questions. Semrush is a search-first SEO suite: keywords, rankings, backlinks and site audits, with a separate Traffic & Market toolkit bolted on for visits and channel mix. Similarweb is a traffic and market intelligence platform first: total visits, direct, referral, social, email and search, with SEO modules added to its higher packages. If you pick on brand familiarity you'll probably pay for the wrong half.

This comparison is for marketing managers, founders, SEO leads and analysts at small teams who need to know which tool matches the job. We compare how each estimates traffic, what each is good at, how deep the SEO tooling goes, and what a three-person team really pays. Neither tool gives you a competitor's true visitor count. Both model it. For the wider field see our best website traffic checkers roundup, and if you've already decided to leave Similarweb, read best Similarweb alternatives.

Key Facts

  • Similarweb says its data comes from four source types: direct measurement, a contributory network, partnerships and public data extraction, cleaned and modelled with machine learning.
  • Semrush says Traffic Analytics is based on clickstream data approximated from the behavior of over 200 million internet users, and that it isn't obtained from any website's internal analytics.
  • Similarweb's three self-service packages are one user each: $65, $165 and $270 per month billed annually, or $99, $199 and $325 billed monthly.
  • Semrush Traffic & Market Pro is $289 per month billed annually. Team pricing is on the Custom plan.
  • The Semrush SEO plan is $139 per month billed monthly or $117.33 billed annually, with extra users from $45 per month.

How Each Tool Estimates Traffic

This is the section that explains most of the confusion. Both vendors model traffic, but from different raw material.

Question Semrush Similarweb
Source of data Clickstream from proprietary and third-party sources Direct measurement, contributory network, partnerships, public data extraction
Scale claimed Over 200 million internet users, via 100+ apps and browser extensions Sources run through machine learning calibration and predictive models
Uses a site's own analytics? No Direct measurement uses sites that voluntarily connect first-party analytics
Visits and unique visitors Yes Yes
Where the SEO traffic number comes from A separate keyword-based estimate inside the SEO plan A keyword and search view on higher packages

Semrush's Traffic Analytics page states plainly that its data isn't obtained from any website's internal analytics, so figures may differ from Google Analytics. Similarweb's methodology page describes a wider mix: some sites voluntarily share first-party analytics that serve as calibration, a contributory network gathers anonymous device behavior, partners supply signals, and an engine extracts public web data. That breadth is Similarweb's argument for accuracy. It's also a claim from the vendor itself, so treat it as the company's position, not a verdict.

One thing both agree on: estimates are for comparison, not for counting. Similarweb's own comparison with Google Analytics recommends looking at relative trends rather than exact numbers, and says the two tools collect data differently. Semrush's page says the same in different words. If your question is "how many visitors did my site get?", neither tool is the answer. Google Analytics is.

There's also a second Semrush method that confuses buyers. The SEO plan's organic traffic figure for a domain isn't clickstream at all. It's the keyword-based kind: find the keywords a site ranks for, apply volume and a click-through assumption, and add them up. Ahrefs documents this approach in its help center, calling organic traffic an estimation of Google clicks. So inside one Semrush login you can see two traffic numbers for the same domain from two different methods, and they won't match. That's normal, and worth knowing before someone in a meeting asks which one is right.

Accuracy studies exist, but read them carefully. Ahrefs' study of 1,635 websites put the median deviation from Google Search Console at 49.52% for its own US organic estimate and 68.36% for Semrush's. A keyword-tool vendor measured itself against a rival for Google organic search only, and didn't test Similarweb or panel-based total visits. It shows estimates can be far off for individual sites. It doesn't crown a winner. If your real choice is between two search-first suites, Semrush vs Ahrefs and SE Ranking vs Semrush compare them directly.

What Each Tool Is Best At

Job Better fit Why
Market share across several rivals Similarweb Built around visits, channel mix and audience, from the first package
Which keywords a rival ranks for Semrush Keyword research and gap analysis are core features
Tracking your own rankings daily Semrush Position tracking is part of the SEO plan
Backlink and technical audit work Semrush Backlinks and site audit sit in the same suite
Spotting a rival's direct, email or social growth Similarweb All-channel by design, though Semrush Traffic & Market also reports these
Ad and display intelligence Similarweb A top package adds ad creative, spend and advertiser data
A single login for the whole SEO workflow Semrush Research, tracking, audits and content in one account
Quick one-off look at a domain Either Both have a limited free route

The overlap is Semrush Traffic & Market. Its channel list includes Direct, Referral, Organic Search, Paid Search, Organic Social, Paid Social, Email, Display Ads and AI Traffic, so it competes head to head with Similarweb's core product. It's priced as a separate purchase from the other Semrush toolkits, per Semrush's Traffic & Market help page. If market benchmarking is the main job and you don't need the SEO suite, compare Traffic & Market against Similarweb. If you need both, that's a bigger decision, covered in the cost section below.

SEO Depth Compared

Similarweb's first package, Competitive Intelligence, has no SEO modules listed. The second package, Competitive Intel & SEO & AEO, adds Organic Search Overview, Keyword Research, Rank Tracker, Site Audit & Backlinks, plus AI Brand Visibility with 150 tracked prompts. The top package adds ad intelligence. So Similarweb does offer SEO tooling, but you pay $165 per month billed annually per user to get it.

Semrush's SEO plan starts with that depth. Per the pricing page, the entry SEO plan covers 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily, and higher plans raise this to 15 websites and 1,500 keywords on Pro+, and 40+ websites and 5,000+ keywords on Advanced.

SEO capability Semrush SEO plan Similarweb (SEO & AEO package and up)
Keyword research Core feature Included
Rank tracking 500 keywords daily on entry plan Included; limits not printed
Site audit Included Included
Backlinks Included Included
Competitor organic research Included Organic Search Overview
Where it starts $139/mo monthly, $117.33/mo annual $199/mo monthly, $165/mo annual
Users Extra users from $45/mo One user per package

Notice the second row has "limits not printed" for Similarweb. The pricing page lists feature names without quantities for rank tracking, so we can't compare keyword limits. If rank tracking volume matters to you, ask before buying. For deeper tracker comparisons, our best rank trackers guide breaks down limits and update frequency.

Our view: if the day job is SEO, Semrush's suite is the stronger starting point. If SEO is one input to a broader market-intelligence job, Similarweb's second package is a reasonable single login. If you want SEO tooling for less, the best Semrush alternatives and best SEO tools guides price the field.

Pricing: One User vs a Three-Person Team

Prices are the vendors' printed figures from their pricing pages. Sums are our own addition of those figures.

Plan Monthly billed Billed annually (per month) Included
Semrush SEO $139 $117.33 5 websites, 500 daily keywords; extra users from $45/mo
Semrush Starter $199 $165.17 5 websites, 500 daily keywords, AI search features
Semrush Pro+ $299 $248.17 15 websites, 1,500 daily keywords
Semrush Traffic & Market Pro Not printed $289 1 user seat, up to 100 competitors, 3,000 requests/day
Similarweb Competitive Intelligence $99 $65 1 user, 3 months history
Similarweb Competitive Intel & SEO & AEO $199 $165 1 user, 6 months history
Similarweb Intel, SEO & AEO & Ads $325 $270 1 user, 6 months history

Annual billing is always the cheaper per-month route. Semrush's Traffic & Market page shows only the annual-billed figure. A few cautions. Semrush discloses the free trial as seven days. Similarweb offers a free trial on all three packages. Business and enterprise plans at Similarweb are custom, and Traffic & Market team pricing at Semrush sits on its Custom plan.

Worked cost: three seats

A small team of three, with competitor lookups through the week and, where the tool offers it, keyword tracking.

Setup Seats Billed monthly Billed annually (per month)
Semrush SEO plan, 3 users 1 included + 2 extra at $45 $229 $207.33
Semrush Traffic & Market Pro 1 seat on Pro; team access is Custom Not printed Team price on request
Semrush SEO (3 users) plus 1 Traffic & Market seat 3 SEO users, 1 market user Not printed $496.33
Similarweb Competitive Intelligence, 3 packages 3 x 1 user $297 $195
Similarweb Competitive Intel & SEO & AEO, 3 packages 3 x 1 user $597 $495
Similarweb Intel, SEO & AEO & Ads, 3 packages 3 x 1 user $975 $810

Three conclusions. First, the cheapest like-for-like way to get search research for three people is the Semrush SEO plan, at $229 monthly, because extra users are cheap. Second, the cheapest way to give three people Similarweb's entry package is $195 per month on annual billing, and the packages each carry only 3 months of history. Third, running both products side by side lands near $500 a month on annual billing for a small team: for example $207.33 for the Semrush SEO plan with three users, plus one Traffic & Market seat at $289. That's the price of keeping search depth and a market view separate. If a single team member does the market work and others do SEO, it's a defensible split. If everyone needs both, ask both vendors for team quotes before committing.

Where Similarweb sells more than one user, the quote is custom. We haven't assumed any discount for multiple packages, because none is published.

Where Each Tool Is Weaker

Area Semrush Similarweb
Small sites Modelled from clickstream, not from a site's own analytics, so treat small-site figures as directional Modelled from blended sources, so treat small-site figures as directional
Team cost Traffic & Market team access is Custom Each package is a single user
History on entry plans Historical data included in Traffic & Market Entry package shows 3 months
Breadth of SEO Deep Narrower, arrives on the second package
Total cost to cover both jobs Two purchases (SEO plan + Traffic & Market) One platform, but the SEO tier costs $165+ per user annually
Exact counts None None

Neither vendor publishes a minimum traffic threshold below which its numbers stop being useful, so for small competitors take the figure as directional. Calibrate by looking up a site you own, comparing to your own analytics, and noting the gap before you rely on any competitor number.

When Semrush Is the Right Call

Choose Semrush when search is where your growth comes from. If your plan is to find keywords, track rankings, fix technical issues and build links, the SEO plan covers those in one login, and adding teammates costs $45 a month each rather than a new package. It's also the stronger pick when the budget is tight but the team is three or more, because the seat math favors it. Semrush also gives you an upgrade path: the Traffic & Market toolkit can be added later if channel mix becomes important, and a 7-day trial lets you test before paying.

It's less right if you mostly need a quick market-share chart across ten rivals and have no SEO workflow. You'd be paying for a suite you don't use.

When Similarweb Is the Right Call

Choose Similarweb when the question is bigger than search. If you want to know whether a competitor's growth comes from direct, email, social or referral, and you want to compare that against five other companies in the market, Similarweb's core product was built for that, and the entry package at $65 per month billed annually is modest for one analyst. Its four-source method is also worth the look if you want to understand exactly where the numbers originate. The free Website Traffic Checker is a no-cost way to try the output on a few domains before paying.

It's less right for a three-person team that mostly does SEO. Three packages add up, and the SEO tooling only arrives on the $165-per-month tier.

Decision Framework

If this is true Pick Why
Search is your main growth channel Semrush SEO plan Keywords, rank tracking, audits and backlinks in one suite
You need market share across competitors and channels Similarweb All-channel focus from the first package
Three people need access on a tight budget Semrush SEO plan $229 monthly for three users, vs $297 for three Similarweb entry packages
You want a Similarweb-style view inside a Semrush account Semrush Traffic & Market Clickstream-based, $289/mo billed annually, separate purchase
You need ad intelligence Similarweb top package Adds ad creative, spend and advertiser data
You need exact numbers for your own site Neither Use Google Analytics and Search Console
You're planning AI search work See AEO tools Keep it a separate buying decision

On that last point, AI search visibility is a different intent from classic SEO and traffic estimation. Our AEO vs SEO article explains the split, and the best AEO tools roundup covers dedicated platforms.

What to Do Next

Write down the three questions you ask most often about competitors. If most are about keywords, rankings and pages, start a Semrush trial. If most are about total visits and channel mix, try Similarweb's free checker, then a package trial. Look up your own domain in whichever you choose and compare it to Google Analytics and Search Console before you trust a competitor number. Then price the three-seat version from the tables above, and get a team quote where a price is custom. For other options, browse the best SEO audit tools and the free SEO tools roundups.
